Rally de Portugal: Kubica retires again

Former F1 man Robert Kubica goes off the road and get stuck in a ditch in SS9 of Rally de Portugal bringing his day to another premature closure.
Former F1 driver Robert Kubica has retired again on Rally de Portugal after going off the road in the second stage of the day.

The Pole, who crashed out on Friday, when he clipped a tree some 10 km from the end of SS4 – the first-run through the Almodovar test, re-started on Saturday under Rally 2 and was eleventh quickest in Santa Clara 1. However in the next stage, Santana de Serra 1, he slid off the road and into a ditch about 20 kilometres in. Although he was eventually able to re-join he broke the clutch on his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS WRC and was unable to go any further.

Speaking on Friday night, after his off in SS4, Kubica said he was 'surprised' by what had happened in Almodovar – a test that also claimed the scalps of M-Sport team-mate, Elfyn Evans and Citroen's Kris Meeke.

“My day began very nicely – I was driving cautiously and was taking no risks. I had zero moments before we came to SS4, but then we made a mistake coming out of a right-left-right turn sequence,” he recounted.

“I noticed that the experienced WRC drivers cut the turns more than I thought was possible on the recce, so I followed those lines. At the end of the right turn we hit the limb of a tree. I was very surprised. I saw a tree there but I was sure it was far from the edge of the road, and when I realised that it was growing at a very steep angle, it was too late and that's why we hit the bottom of it.”

“The right-hand-side of the car went up and we hit something with the left-front and destroyed the suspension. I am very upset because for the first time I really had a lot of fun driving on gravel. Even though I was taking it easy, the confidence was good," he added.

"I was really looking forward to the second loop, but unfortunately our day had to end in unfortunate circumstances. I hope for better luck on Saturday.”
