Evans thanks mechanics after doing 'brilliant job' to fix his car

7 April 2014

Elfyn Evans has thanked his M-Sport mechanics after they worked through the night to get him back out on Rally de Portugal and allow him to complete the event.

Evans started solidly in his Fiesta RS WRC and was tenth quickest in the first two stages on Friday. However, in the next test he went off the road and rolled his Fiesta RS WRC after misjudging the braking. He then re-started the next day under Rally 2 and with his car fixed, showed good pace over the next two days, gradually increasing his speed and posting a fourth quickest time in the penultimate stage on Saturday, as well as going sixth in SS13, SS15 and the Power Stage.

“After the mishap on Friday, the rally has been quite good to us. I need to say a huge thanks to the mechanics who worked through the night to provide us with a perfect car from Saturday onwards,” confirmed the Crash.net columnist, who was eventually classified in 22nd position.

“After the state we left it in, I really wasn't expecting it to be perfect! They did a brilliant job and I hope that we've done them proud over the past two days.”

“We had a chance to learn a lot about the car and the driving [after re-starting] so it's been a great learning experience and another good step forward,” added the Welshman.

“Obviously we have another new rally next [in Argentina], so we might see a slightly different approach there, but I'm pleased with the way things are going so far,” he continued.

M-Sport boss, Malcolm Wilson meanwhile was pleased with how Evans did after re-joining: “I was very impressed with how strongly Elfyn came back after Friday's disappointment. He continued to run at the same pace and set some very encouraging times,” Wilson remarked.

“He's making some really good progress and we'll be sure to see more from him as the season continues,” Wilson concluded.
