Rally Argentina: I hit a ditch hard - Sordo

Hyundai's Dani Sordo has revealed a hard impact with a ditch was the reason behind his retirement from day two of Rally Argentina.

Sordo, who had been hit by a number of mechanical issues on Friday, restarted under Rally 2 on Saturday, but soon encountered further trouble and while he nursed his car to the end of SS6 – the first test of the day – he was unable to go any further as the incident affected a number of engine components, including the turbo intercooler, which reduced the car's power output. He was then instructed to stop to prevent further damage.

Once his Hyundai i20 WRC was recovered to service, the team then noticed a drop in oil pressure and subsequently made the decision to withdraw it from the rally to 'further investigate the problem back in Germany' at its HQ.

“I am obviously very sorry that we had to retire from the rally, the team worked incredibly hard last night to fix the problem with the exhaust manifold and to prepare the car for today's stages. We were aiming to use Rally 2 to build up our experience of this tough rally but shortly into this morning's first stage, I hit a ditch very hard and this caused some damage to the engine which forced us to retire,” Sordo said.

“We will look back on this rally as character-building with some very difficult conditions. We are a young team so we have to take the positive elements from the weekend.

“I think everyone has shown a lot of professionalism in facing these problems and we've learned a lot,” he continued.

Hyundai team principal, Michel Nandan added: "Dani had some bad luck [on Saturday] as he damaged the car in a ditch which caused a loss of power. He was hopeful of making progress so it's a real shame that we had to retire his car.”
