Rally Italia Sardegna: Tanak 'needs' good WRC2 result

Ott Tanak says after the poor result in Argentina he needs to get a good result on Rally Italia Sardegna, round six in WRC 2014
Ott Tanak is looking for a problem-free run on Rally Italia Sardegna next week in a bid to give his WRC2 championship hopes a boost.

The Drive DMACK WRT man crashed out in the first proper test in Argentina last month, and while he did salvage a few points by finishing eighth under Rally 2, with just 16 points on the board, he cannot afford any more slip ups.

On the plus side, however, he has already proved his speed in the Autotek Ford Fiesta R5 this year, using DMACK's DMG+2 tyre to win every single stage he completed at Rally Mexico in March. He is also a fan of the tricky Sardinian stages after finishing on the podium with third overall in 2012 driving a Fiesta RS WRC.

“This is the only event where I've scored a WRC podium so it has good memories for me and I enjoy the stages,” he said.

“This year will be a little different with some new roads but the plan is still to have a problem-free run,” he continued.

“We will drive at our own rhythm and pace as, after a poor result in Argentina, we need to have a good finish here to give our championship hopes a real boost,” he confirmed.

Tanak meanwhile won't be the only runner on DMACK rubber in Sardinia as the firm will equip ten drivers in the WRC2 series in total - including, in addition to Tanak, Quentin Gilbert, Nicolas Fuchs, Egon Kaur and Saleh Bin Eidan.

“Sardinia offers a really unique mix of abrasive roads and soft stages – both creating different challenges for our tyres,” Dick Cormack, DMACK managing director stated. “Some of the distances, especially on Saturday, will force drivers to think about how they manage their tyre allocation. Hopefully Ott can have some better luck on this event to take a solid finish and really boost his WRC 2 challenge.”
