Rally Italia Sardegna: Hanninen rolls out

Juho Hanninen's great start in Sardinia comes to an end when he bins his Hyundai i20 WRC near the end of SS5
Hyundai's Juho Hanninen has crashed out of Rally Italia Sardegna after rolling his i20 WRC in SS5.

Hanninen went off 5.5 kilometres from the end of the 27.30 km Loelle test. The Finn and co-driver Tomi Tuominen both escaped unharmed, but they were not able to continue. It remains to be seen if they will be able to re-start on Saturday under Rally 2, although from a picture of the i20 WRC circulated on Twitter that seems unlikely.

Hanninen had been running strongly. Indeed he was second quickest in SS2 and then fastest in SS3 to overhaul team-mate, Thierry Neuville and seize the lead – albeit by just 0.2 seconds. Hanninen slipped back to P2 overall in SS4, when he was 'only' fifth, but remained just 2.9 seconds off Neuville. He then looked set to take the lead as Neuville stopped early in SS5 with suspension problems. However that wasn't to be obviously, as he later rolled it. Not a good stage for Hyundai...
