Rally Italia Sardegna: Ostberg growing in confidence

Mads Ostberg notches up his best result to date for Citroen after taking second place in Sardinia – his third podium of WRC 2014
Mads Ostberg says he is feeling better and better in his Citroen DS3 WRC and following his second place finish on Rally Italia Sardegna the goal now is to move up another place and take a win.

Ostberg ran in a podium position from SS5 onwards and he eventually finished 9.7 seconds up on Jari-Matti Latvala after the Finn made a mistake in the final test on Saturday and lost over 2 minutes.

“It has been a very good weekend,” said Ostberg, who won two stages and set eight other top-three times. “I am very, very happy. We managed to do everything we wanted to do and it is fantastic to finish with second place on this very difficult event. We have done many good things over the weekend. My thanks to the team.”

“We regularly matched the pace of our main rivals throughout the rally. Having said that, second place wasn't completely sewn up when we started this morning. But we went for a good tyre strategy and that helped us to consolidate our position [over Latvala],” he added.

“I feel better and better in the Citroen DS3 WRC now. My confidence is growing and I'm managing to drive faster without taking any risks.

“We need to keep working in order to make further progress. The next goal is to move up another place!”

Team-mate Kris Meeke meanwhile finished 18th in the sister car, after having to stop on day one in SS5 due to an electrical problem. Citroen Total Abu Dhabi WRT third driver Khalid Al Qassimi was tenth: “The rally had started well. We had good pace until the alternator problem meant we had to retire and rejoin under Rally 2 rules,” Meeke added.

“From Saturday morning onwards, we were first on the road. It is always difficult to feel confident in conditions like that but it was an interesting and useful experience. I hope it'll be useful in the future.”

“It has been a very intense rally for Citroen Racing," summarised Citroen deputy team principal, Marek Nawarecki. "The team has been really united this weekend. It's a strength which meant we were able to make the right calls and give our crews the opportunity to showcase their skills. Mads managed to overcome the difficulties of the rally to grab a fine second place. Despite an alternator problem on his car, Kris was able to add to his experience and rack up a few more miles on the stages. Khalid improved a lot on what are very demanding roads. His tenth place is just rewards."
