Rally Finland: Friday mistake not ideal - Kubica

Former BMW and Renault F1 driver Robert Kubica finishes under Rally 2 regulations in Finland
Former F1 driver Robert Kubica says he learnt a lot on Rally Finland, even if his mistake on Friday was "not ideal".

Kubica crashed out in the first test on day two, binning his M-Sport-run Ford Fiesta RS WRC car near the start of the 14.51 km Pihlajakoski test, SS5. He later revealed that a wrong pacenote was to blame. The Pole had been running ninth.

Fortunately, though, he was able to re-start on Saturday under Rally 2 and he eventually brought it to the finish and was classified in 34th position overall.

“The mistake on Friday was not ideal but we've had three days of good driving which I have been pleased with. It is not easy coming here for the first time in a world rally car and for two days we were first on the road so that was something new to learn,” said Kubica.

“Actually I [feel I] have learnt a lot this weekend which is very good,” he added. “I leave Finland a little disappointed because of Friday's mistake, but with so much more experience, which is crucial.”

Kubica will now turn his attention to Rallye Deutschland later this month, an event he did very well on twelve months ago, when he won the WRC2 class and also finished a brilliant fifth overall.

“Next we go to Germany and the first true Tarmac rally of the year,” he continued. “I have not had a lot of asphalt driving recently, but of course I am looking forward to it.

“I know that it will not be an easy rally – especially in the vineyards with all the hairpins and tight corners – but hopefully the car will feel as good on Tarmac as it does on gravel at the moment.”

M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson OBE noted: “It's good to see Robert with a smile on his face at the end of this event. He has gained so much experience over the past couple of days and that will be invaluable to him as he continues to progress in the sport.”
