WRC Rally Australia: Hirvonen 'definitely' after top-three

Mikko Hirvonen reckons there is “no reason why we can't achieve” a rostrum finish in his M-Sport-run Fiesta RS WRC car in Australia
M-Sport team leader Mikko Hirvonen says he will “definitely” be looking for a podium finish on Rally Australia.

Hirvonen has only managed one rostrum so far this season, when he was second in Portugal, but has a good record 'Down Under'.

Indeed he took his first WRC victory in Australia back in 2006, while he was third last year and also won it in 2011 and 2009. He will now be keen to challenge at the head of the field again next week.

“This rally has always been a good event for us,” Hirvonen said in the countdown to the tenth round in the World Rally Championship. “In 2006 we claimed our first WRC win in Australia, so it will always hold a lot of amazing memories for me.

“We have occasionally been lucky, but the stages are fantastic to drive and some of them have a very similar character to those in Finland – it almost feels like being back at home sometimes!”

“The stages are generally pretty fast, but there is a good mix of slower sections through the forests. It's the nature of the gravel which is tricky here. It's pretty loose so road position can be very important. If it rains, it's unbelievably slippery, and if it's dry, it can be really dusty. There's a challenge no matter what the conditions, but more than anything it's just flat-out enjoyment!” he added.

“We'll definitely be looking towards the podium next week. There's no reason why we can't achieve that and I can't wait to get out there and experience the stages again.”

I would be so pleased for Mikko if he was back to his classic best in Oz. Everyone still wants to see Mikko back to his old ways, fighting for the win. I am sure that he sees the 3 Polos and at least one of the Citroens as his arch Rivals, maybe one or more of them will not be at the finish though and maybe Mikko will be fast enough to be the best of the rest and claim a podium there I believe somewhere Mikko still has it within himself to win, even if the others don't have problems, its just that I havnt seen that Mikko for a while. If he has finally re discovered his old form and fighting spirit then this Rally could be the one where we see how tough to beat he can be again

everyone has bad moments in Rallying. Mikko has had some awesome Results. He has won 15 WRC Events, this at a time when Loeb was in his Prime. He would of won a lot more if it wasn't for Loeb. he almost beat Loeb to the World title in 2009. But I don't think all is well at M-Sport with Hirvonnen. He is now saying he is doing the best he can with the car that he has. This suggests to me that he is blaming the Fiesta for not being able to get close to the VWs. That's a shame. Elfyn has the same car and he is doing really well and getting faster and faster all the time. I really do think that this will be his last season with M-Sport Maybe Hyundai will snap him up if he is Unhappy.
