Citroen's Kris Meeke has been demoted to fifth on Rally Australia after it was deemed he cut a corner too aggressively on the repeat loop.

Meeke had finished the day just 1.5 seconds behind Andreas Mikkelsen, locked in a close scrap for the final podium place.

However, he was later hit with a 61 second penalty after the stewards ruled he cut a corner too much in SS10, the 8.96 km Valla 1 test.

"I did my best to stay on the pace," Meeke noted before news of the penalty. "The second fastest time on this afternoon's long stage shows that we have the capacity to be among the frontrunners. But we still have work to do to stay at the front.

"There are still a hundred or so kilometres to run tomorrow. We are going to keep fighting for every tenth of a second!"

Meeke will now start the final day 0.6 seconds behind M-Sport man Mikko Hirvonen.
