WRC Rally Australia: Not the easiest of weekends – Atkinson

Tough home event for the returning Chris Atkinson, who can do no better than tenth on Rally Australia
Chris Atkinson was disappointed at the finish of his home event, Rally Australia, and freely conceded it was "not the easiest of weekends".

Atkinson, who was last in action on Rally Mexico - when he finished in seventh in his Hyundai i20 WRC - had been hoping to be “well up in the points”, but he struggled to find a good rhythm and then found himself running first on the road on days two and three.

In the end he finished tenth, inheriting a points' position late on when Mads Ostberg had his suspension problems in the penultimate stage and dropped back.

“I've had a pretty steady run today and the car was working perfectly. We've not been in a position to fight for anything so it's been important just to bring the car home, so the team can pick up as much information as possible,” he explained.

“The stages today have been in a good condition and the crowds have been phenomenal.”

“It's not been the easiest of weekends, however, as I struggled to get into a rhythm early on in the rally and that has had a knock-on effect for the remaining days, as I was first on the road,” he added.

“That has dictated the extent I have been able to push so instead we just focussed on finishing the rally.

“It's nice [for Hyundai though, that] we've been able to get all three cars inside the top ten [with Hayden Paddon sixth and Thierry Neuville seventh]."

Dafydd, don't mention the referendum, I'm utterly sick of it seeing as I live in Glasgow it's shoved down my throat on an hourly basis. Back to Chris, hopefully this is a reality check and he'll temper his press statements if he decides to do another rally.
