WRC Rally Australia: Mikkelsen takes fourth podium of year

Andreas Mikkelsen “absolutely delighted” with his third place finish on Rally Australia
Volkswagen Motorsport II driver Andreas Mikkelsen says he is “absolutely delighted” to have finished third on Rally Australia.

Mikkelsen was in a close scrap with Kris Meeke for the final podium position, but when the Briton was hit with a 61 second penalty on Saturday night, it meant he only had to bring it home on the final day and he duly did.

It was Mikkelsen's fourth rostrum result of the season, after finishing third in Germany last month, and second earlier this year in Poland and Sweden.

“We had a huge lead over fourth place going into the final six special stages, but we could not do much in the way of catching the two [sister] cars [of Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala] ahead of us,” he explained.

“So, caught in no man's land, our priority was to control our pace so that we did not make any mistakes.”

“My goal ahead of the rally was to defend my advantage over fourth place in the World Championship and we have actually managed to increase it. I am absolutely delighted with my fourth podium of the year.

“Today is just a fantastic day.”

Mikkelsen was also very happy to help Volkswagen secures the Manufacturers' title for the second year in succession, especially as the squad did so with its very first 1-2-3.

“What an incredible result for the entire team,” he added. “World Champions, and with the team's very first one-two-three to boot.

“I am delighted for all the mechanics, engineers and helpers who have made this possible, here in Australia and throughout the entire season.”
