WRC Rally de Espana: Block back for Spain

Gymkhana star Ken Block returns to the World Rally Championship fold for Rally de Espana at the wheel of an M-Sport-run and Pirelli-shod Fiesta RS WRC car
Gymkhana star Ken Block will make his return to the World Rally Championship this week on Rally de Espana following an absence of more than a year.

Block was last in action in the WRC in Mexico in 2013, when he finished seventh overall and while he has only done one rally this season, winning Rally America's Rally of the 100 Acre Wood, he is looking forward to the event in Spain and to getting back into a WRC car.

“I am obviously here this weekend more as a tourist. What I mean by that is that I am out here to have a great time and do as well as I possibly can,” explained Block, who has been competing in WorldRX and Global RallyCross this year, where he is currently in contention for the overall championship with just one event left.

“I am very much aware that I haven't had a lot of stage rally time this season and I haven't been in a WRC car since Mexico last year. So, I do not expect to be on the pace as everyone in the top of the field,” he continued.

“However, I am hopeful that I will find a quick pace early on, maintain it and if I am feeling well, maybe push a bit harder. We will see – it is too soon to tell.

“My personal expectations are relatively low though, my main goal is to bring the car back safe and sound every evening and my other would be to potentially break into the top 10 if the rally is favourable. We will see, either way, I am delighted to be back behind the wheel in the WRC for an event.”

Block will drive an M-Sport-run and Pirelli-shod Fiesta RS WRC car on the four-day event (which starts today) and he has completed two days of testing ahead of it, logging kilometres on both gravel and tarmac.

“This is the only race on the World Rally Championship calendar with both tarmac and gravel stages, so I have put down some testing miles in both of these cars to be ready for WRC Spain,” he added.

“Both set-ups are very fun, in very different ways. I am stoked that I get to race on both of those surfaces this week!”
