WRC Rallye Monte Carlo: Second more than I expected – Latvala

Jari-Matti Latvala delighted with second place finish on Rallye Monte Carlo, the 2015 WRC season opener: “We couldn't have wished for a better start...” says the Volkswagen pilot.
Volkswagen's Jari-Matti Latvala says his second place finish on Rallye Monte Carlo this weekend was “more than he expected”.

Latvala had never finished higher than fifth on the Monte prior to this year's running of the event and prior to the off was aiming for a top-four.

However, the Finn ran in the top-three almost all the way through, moving up to second after Sebastien Loeb had his problems in the final test on Friday. He eventually finished 58 seconds adrift of team-mate and victor Sebastien Ogier.

“I am delighted!” Latvala said at the end and after finishing third in the Power Stage to take an extra bonus point. “This [second place overall] is much more than I expected, before the rally I was thinking fourth or fifth!

“I must thank my ice crew for their information.”

Speaking back in service, he added: “We couldn't have wished for a better start. Our aim right from the word go was to finish in the top four, and we did better than that. I am delighted. It is a weight off my mind since my previous starts at the Rally Monte Carlo hadn't exactly been successful.

“The conditions were not easy and you had to compromise on speed to avoid making mistakes.

“After we had built up a good lead early on, it was all about getting the overall result, and no longer about setting the fastest times.”

Good points grabbed by Latvala. Hopefully he'll show Ogier a thing or two in Sweden and other loose surface events, he's the only chance of anyone wrestling the trophy from Ogier this year.

cont : .......so the question is Who an take the most wins, and who can be the strongest when the other one wins taking nothing less than 2nd place and maybe taking maximimum Power points. This could be where the Championship is won or lost, on the Power Stages. I think Jari Matti could win in Sweden for sure, but looking at the calendar there is not one Rally that He couldn't possibly win, ok, Maybe Ogier would throw everything at his home Rally if the organisers can find a wealthy Town to host the Rally, as there is no money for Rally France as of right now. Obviously Latvala wont win everything, but there is no reason why he couldn't beat Ogier on any of the Rallies remaining, even Germany and Spain
