WRC Rally Sweden: Ogier 'full of optimism' ahead of only winter rally

Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier will be looking to continue his winning start to WRC 2015 on Rally Sweden this week
Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier says he will go into Rally Sweden this week “full of optimism”.

Ogier began his bid to claim the WRC Drivers' title for a third year in a row perfectly on the Monte two weeks ago with victory there giving him “even more motivation”.

Ogier won in Sweden in 2013, putting in a commanding drive to give VW its first victory with the Polo R WRC. Last year, however, he made a “stupid mistake” in the first test on day two and had to settle for sixth.

“As with any rally, the winner come the end of the Rally Sweden will be the person who drives the fastest, whilst at the same time making the fewest mistakes,” he acknowledged ahead of the second round in the 2015 World Rally Championship.

“Despite this, it is always very special for me to drive in Sweden. No other round of the WRC is held entirely on ice and snow, and I love that.”

“It looks as though we are going to have very good conditions this year [too],” he continued. “There is a lot of snow on the ground in Sweden, and the cold temperatures in Scandinavia have transformed many sections of the route into skating rinks. I am looking forward to it, and to a fast rally.

“The only thing that could possibly ruin my fun a little would be fresh snow. That would be a slight disadvantage for the first drivers on the route.

“All the same, I head to Sweden full of optimism, as the win at the Rally Monte Carlo has given me even more motivation. You could say that the conditions at the Rally Sweden are actually far more predictable than the 'Monte', and they will definitely not be as demanding for us drivers.”

Volkswagen boss Jost Capito is also looking forward to the event and is eager to see the team win there for the third year in succession.

“We have nothing but fond memories of the Rally Sweden and travel there with great anticipation every year,” Capito stated.

“You never forget the rally, at which you claimed your very first win as a team. Back in 2013 it was one of our highlights in the World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC. Last year we witnessed some thrilling, all-Volkswagen battles for the victory and it was the first time all three of our drivers showed themselves to be on a par and capable of winning – including our 'junior', Andreas [Mikkelsen], who more than held his own against Sebastien and Jari-Matti [Latvala – the eventual winner].

“However, all that is history and will once again be going all out to taste success again in 2015. We are undefeated at the Rally Sweden, and would love it to stay that way.”

cassyo: No comment yet for this more than one day old thread. This sounds like the most unpredictable rally has already gone, sadly.
There's nothing to talk about yet as a wheel hasn't been turned. 3 or 4 drivers are in with a shout here IMO. Latvala will be strong and the result isn't a foregone conclusion. A win for Latvala to follow up on his 2nd place on the Monte would make Ogier think a little. He's better to watch too and isn't such a bellend :)

LOL ! Cassyo, I admire your enthusiasm but maybe some of us are just busy with work to post all the time day in day out But I would imagine that Ogier, Latvala, Mikklesen and Ostberg will all be in with in a shout of a win there, but don't forget Tanak. He is an outside bet but was very fast last year in an old Private WRC Car I would think that Meeke could get a Podium by the end of the Event but he doesn't have much experience of Sweden. Evans should get a top 5 or Top 6 result, maybe higher depending on how the other drivers luck goes and the results are just less predictable as you go further back down the field but im really looking forward to this awesome event
