WRC Rally Finland: Paddon out after big off in SS6

Hyundai's Hayden Paddon has crashed out of Rally Finland in SS6, the first test of Friday's repeat loop.

Paddon went off the road 1 km from the end of the 14.51 km Pihlajakoski 2 test. Paddon and co-driver John Kennard are both okay, but were unable to continue with their i20 WRC suffering considerable damage (see pictures below).

Paddon had been running fifth overall post-SS5, 6 seconds behind the Citroen of Mads Ostberg and as the lead Hyundai.

He will not be able to re-join on Saturday under Rally 2 as the damage to his car was irreparable: “Obviously, I'm really disappointed that we have had to retire from the rally. We had a decent morning and although it was difficult to find grip and confidence, we were continually making changes that we hoped would have benefited us in the afternoon loop,” Paddon said back in service.

“Unfortunately, just 1km before the end of the first afternoon stage, we lost the car. Thankfully, John and I were okay but the car was too badly damaged and the team has been unable to fix it. We've therefore been forced to retire from the event.

“We've built up a lot of momentum in these recent rallies so I'm determined to put this behind us quickly and move onto the next one.”
