WRC Rally Australia: We're still just as hungry for success – Capito
Jost Capito: Everyone, without exception, is extremely motivated, and nobody ever takes success for granted
Jost Capito says Volkswagen will continue to work as hard as ever to ensure it stays at the top of the World Rally Championship.
His comments come in the wake of VW's success on Rally Australia last weekend, where the squad finished 1-2-4 and successfully retained the Drivers', Co-Drivers' and Manufacturers' titles for the third year in succession - and with three events still to go.
Sebastien Ogier's victory was Volkswagen's ninth of the season and its 31st from 36 rallies – a win rate of 86 per cent, making the Polo R WRC by far the most successful model of car in the history of the World Rally Championship, ranking ahead of such legendary cars as the Lancia Stratos and Delta, Audi quattro, Ford Focus, Peugeot 206 and the Subaru Impreza.
“What a fantastic rally. What a dream result. And what a great achievement to have wrapped up all three titles so early in the season,” Capito said after round ten in the 2015 World Rally Championship.
“The Volkswagen team excelled itself here. Our drivers and co-drivers had to pull out all the stops in order to finish on the podium. Like the team behind them, they did a flawless job. You cannot be more proud of the entire team than I am now.
“It is always more difficult to defend a title than it is to win it for the first time. Defending it for a second time is an even greater challenge. The fact that our mechanics, engineers, drivers, co-drivers, physios and doctors, and organisers have once again achieved superlative results and secured the WRC titles earlier in the season than ever before shows just what an extraordinary team we have.
“Everyone, without exception, is extremely motivated, and nobody ever takes success for granted.”
“We know where we can improve and we always can improve,” he added. “We see after each rally where we did mistakes, and we see where we are not so good and we work and push hard to improve on every rally – this is the motivation.
“The team is as hungry as it was at the start. We work flat out, very hard for 2016 and 2017: we want to stay where we are.”
Asked what he wants to see now during the remainder of the year, Capito replied: “To continue to see what we have seen: fantastic fights.
“And those fights are not just from our three crews, Kris [Meeke] is challenging us and is fast – he can go the speed of us.
“We want to see fantastic rallies and fighting and to see the first victory of [VW Motorsport II pilot] Andreas [Mikkelsen] this year.”
