Hyundai's Thierry Neuville will return under Rally 2 for the second leg of Wales Rally GB and he is keen to “re-focus” following his exit in SS3.
Neuville struggled in the opening test and then lost the left-rear wheel around 10 km into the 30.23km Myherin 1 stage when the wheel studs broke.
Reflecting on his day, Neuville conceded it was far from great, especially as he was meant to be using it to re-build his confidence, having been demoted to Hyundai's second team.
“We have to draw a line under today after a character-building day,” he said. “Our morning got off to a difficult start straight away in the opening stage after I made a small mistake at a hairpin left after the first kilometre. I had to reverse the car to get going again which lost us ten seconds.
“We found reasonable pace in the short second stage but, at just over 10km into the final stage of the morning, we lost the rear-left wheel and we had no choice but to stop. We were determined to find a good rhythm so we will have to re-focus [now] on tomorrow and Sunday.”
Neuville had been running seventh overall in his i20 WRC post-SS2, having gone ninth quickest in SS1 and fifth in SS2.
