Toomas Heikkinen will race alongside team owner Mattias Ekstrom for Team EKS in the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship, driving an Audi S1 EKS RX Quattro.

The 2014 World Rallycross championship runner-up has spent the past two years competing for Marklund Motorsport in a Volkswagen Polo R but has opted to switch sides to join Team EKS and will make his debut in Audi machinery.

The 24-year-old says he's joined Ekstrom's squad to win races as he launches his 2016 title challenge after falling short last year despite taking a victory in Belgium and second place in Canada.

"I think EKS is a great bunch of guys and one of the most professional teams in World RX," Heikkinen said. "Mattias has been quite a good friend of mine since 2013 when we both competed in X Games and our aim is the same: we both want to win races."

Ekstrom has welcomed his new team-mate with open arms and is raring to go for the new season which begins in Portugal at Montalegre on 15-17 April.

"Topi is a super-fast guy on the track and also has a very good character. It's been a very long winter break with a lot of preparation," Ekstrom said. "Finally, we are back and I would like to give a huge thanks to all our partners, who have made this happen."
