Rally Argentina: Mikkelsen predicts tricky challenge in Argentina

Andreas Mikkelsen is aiming for an instant response to his retirement in Mexico so he can claw back lost ground to World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Ogier.

The Volkswagen Motorsport II driver had become Ogier's primary title challenger over the opening two rounds but crashed out in Mexico to leave the event pointless and duly conceded ground to the defending champion.

Slipping to third in the standings, nine points behind M-Sport's Mads Ostberg, Mikkelsen is keen to make up the lost points in Argentina but is expecting a tough battle due to the testing road conditions.

“Last year I was really unlucky in Argentina. First a puncture developed into a far larger problem and cost us a lot of time. Last but not least, we had to retire on the Power Stage following a collision with a rock,” Mikkelsen said. One thing is certain: I have set my sights on finishing on the podium here.

“However, that will not be easy, as the rally consists of a lot of new special stages. Unlike Mexico, the surface in Argentina is relatively soft and sandy. As such, deep ruts form quickly in the gravel.”

Mikkelsen suffered a mechanical retirement 12 months ago in Argentina when the trio of Volkswagen cars had a technical fault from the factory and the Norwegian driver is yet to score a rostrum result at the South American event.

“I really like the Rally Argentina, even though it is not easy,” he said. “It is a nice place. I have always been quick there, but have never achieved a good result yet. That has to change this year.”
