WRC Rallye Deutschland: ‘Will be hard to say farewell’ – Capito on VW exit

Jost Capito admits Rallye Deutschland “will be moving” as he prepares to exit and take up CEO role with the McLaren F1 team
Volkswagen boss Jost Capito admits it will be “hard to say farewell” following this weekend's Rallye Deutschland.

Capito, who was appointed as CEO at McLaren back in January, will stand down as VW Motorsport director after the ninth round in the 2016 World Rally Championship.

He is then expected to take up his new position at McLaren ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of this month. His successor at VW has yet to be named.

Speaking ahead of his final WRC event and after his drivers finished 1-2-4 in the shakedown, Capito said: “Looking at the shakedown result, you cannot help but look forward to Rally Germany. All three Volkswagen drivers are in top form at our home race. They adapted quickly to the asphalt, and it promises to be a thrilling battle between us and the opposition.

“Rally Germany is though one of the most demanding races of the entire season – we have learned that the hard way on several occasions in recent years. The one-two-three made last year's rally the most emotional of the past four years for us.

"2016 will certainly be very moving again for me, personally. It is my final rally as Volkswagen Motorsport director and, given the magnificent team I have around me, it is going to be hard to say farewell. I hope we have something to celebrate on Sunday.”

Championship leader Sebastien Ogier and team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala are both keen to give Capito a fitting farewell present.

“We obviously want to give our team principal Jost Capito a nice leaving present. As such, our goal is to repeat last year's win and score valuable points towards the world championship,” Ogier confirmed.

“It is obviously a special rally for Volkswagen – after all, it is not every day your team principal leaves you,” Latvala added. “We are out to give him a worthy send-off.

“Let's see what I can do to contribute.”
