Volkswagen Motorsport II pilot Andreas Mikkelsen has retired from RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de Espana after crashing out in SS12.
Mikkelsen stopped 2.5 kilometres into the repeat-run through Alcover-Capafonts, the first test of the afternoon loop, with his car coming to rest on its side against a tree after he hit the Armco and was pitched into a series of rolls. Mikkelsen and co-driver Anders Jaeger both escaped unharmed.
The Norwegian had been running third overall, 37.4secs off team-mate Sebastien Ogier in second and 10.4secs up on Hyundai's Thierry Neuville in fourth.
He will not re-start on Sunday under Rally 2 as his car cannot be repaired in time.
Meanwhile, Mikkelsen's exit all-but guarantees Ogier his fourth Drivers' title, with only Neuville now a theoretical threat – although for the Belgian to remain in contention, he needs to win here and score maximum points in the Power Stage, with Ogier not scoring at all.
