Sebastien Ogier heads a Volkswagen Motorsport 1-2 in the shakedown for Rally Australia as the German manufacturer prepares for its final World Rally Championship outing before withdrawing from the series at the end of the year.

Earlier this month Volkswagen confirmed it would exit WRC after the final round of the current season, having swept to four consecutive manufacturer, driver and team world titles, to make Rally Australia an iconic final bow for the factory team.

WRC champion Ogier duly placed his Volkswagen at the top of the shakedown results on his third and final run through the 5.02km Boyds Road stage with a time of 3m 01.5s.

His effort edged team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen into second and despite improving with his final run the Norwegian missed out by one-tenth of a second.

Wales Rally GB runner-up Ott Tanak continued his fine form by taking third for Dmack WRT Ford, less than a second off Ogier, with Hyundai duo Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon completed a competitive top five.

The final VW of Jari-Matti Latvala narrowly missed out on the top five by just one-tenth but remained comfortably ahead for M-Sport Ford duo Eric Camilli and Mads Ostberg.

Dani Sordo failed to replicate the pace of the other factory efforts to end the shakedown ninth and almost three seconds behind Ogier.

Privateer Lorenzo Bertelli rounded out the top ten, while Nicolas Fuchs in his Skoda Fabia R5 headed the running in the WRC2 category.
