WSBK » 'Privateer' Rea riding on the edge

“We're not a factory team... Our budget firmly comes from Honda Motor Europe and it's a private set-up, so what we are doing is a really good job” - Jonathan Rea.

It's always looked like Rea just doesn't have the resources to ever mount a real tittle challenge, and Honda don't really care all that much. He either needs more from Honda, or to look around at some different rides soon if he really wants to advance his career.

Agree with you Bradnews. It seems it is only the skill Jonathan has that gets the bike anywhere near the front. Jonny has always been a brilliant rider, and this shows how good he is, but he needs a much faster bike or he is going to continue to struggle. Pushing as hard as Jonny does only ends up in tears!!

I assumed when he resigned for this year that he knew something not immediately obvious to the rest of us and this year was going to be different.

Already it's just beginning to look like a bad decision on Jonathans part,.................unless of-course there's something even better waiting for him next year?????????

Whatever way, he can't afford many more years like the past 2 or 3 and now it appears this one as well. We want to see you delivering what some of us still believe you are capable of Jonathan, and obviously now it will never happen at Ten Kate WSB.

A very confusing interview imo. Rea had the chance to go elsewhere but for some reason decided to stay on a sinking ship. whether or not he was given false promises or whether he stayed because he had an offer he couldn't refuse i don't know. but he seems a little down already, and if i were his boss i wouldn't be happy with the negatives. maybe he's fed up with getting hurt, it happens(JT springs to mind).
but he needs to get his finger out otherwise i will be looking to swop him in the next transfer window.(MCN FANTASY RACE)

well it looks like rea is hoping the loyalty route will pay him in the future,as far as i know he was supposed to have (something special from honda this year)then recession kicked in hard .so nothing this year then,so he is still over riding a shed of a bike, will honda keep what ever promise they made, sometimes they dont pay loyalty to well at all,rea should be in motogp, hes fast, maybe ducati should hire him to develop another shed of a bike

Its a rich tapestry

JR is an awesome talent and Honda know it so they want to keep him, on top of that he is the ONLY rider capable of getting the outdated Fireblade (a new improved Blade has been talked about but Honda won't develop/release a new bike whilst the economy is bad and demand is low) anywhere near the front and sparing Hondas blushes

A talent like Johnny should be in Moto GP but Honda are already strong there with Stoner, Pedrosa etc, Honda did promised JR a shot in Moto GP but when he looked at his options he found that seats in good satellite teams were limited and he could make more cash staying in WSB, so when Honda threw in some sweeteners (more input, better teammate for development purposes, top crew chief, promise of a Moto GP ride in the future etc etc) to the WSB deal he stayed, I can't help but feel Honda manipulated him and are using him to the detriment of his career

honda couldn't even be bothered to get the bike painted up decently, they have no interest in supporting it as even if they did it would still not be competitive and that would make it look worse on them.

Jonny deserves better than the honda, he'd have been awesome on an aprilia or maybe on a kwak.

The reason Carlo Fiorani is desperate to keep JR under Honda Europe's wing is that he is the only rider able to flatter the performance of the Blade. Without him the entire enterprise would be a sunken ship. That's why they will continue to incentivise him to stay in WSBK.

The only mystery to me is why Rea can't see through that and bail. Honda won't take him to MotoGP. Their MotoGP rider plans are already mapped out for the next few years, and I'm willing to bet they feature young Spanish riders over JR.

If MotoGP is really Johnny's aim, he would better off putting himself in the shop window with a CRT ride. or going to Moto2. And sooner rather than later, because time is no longer on his side.

@don there are many links with ten kate, gresini, castrol, and rea, maybe honda have a back door plan for a crt bike, tho they publicly scoff at crt, they might have a crafty plan on the long finger, which might include rea
