WSBK » Pirelli: Time is right for 17-inch tyre switch


Ten years after it was first discussed, Pirelli says the World Superbike Championship is now ready for the move to larger 17" inch tyres.

Yes your right regards on the road in the wet but thats elctronics in it's most origional form and wht it was origionally made for. That was a long time ago now! So as I don't think there's anything they need to develope further for "road saftey" reasons, all this development is just double speak for buying trophy's.

If the electronics were banned it would be a revelation, different names at the front, costs drastically reduced and racing as closer than ever.

Yes make superbike obvious as a production based class but dont de-tune it too much or you may as well scrap it and just have world superstock.

Oh and ref to your Almeria trip.

Your estimate of a stocker on treads only being a couple of seconds off a world super although youe entitled to make that kind of a guess but it doesn't make it right because it isn't.

A WSS r6 running on Dunlops will lap faster than a stocker1000 on treads every time unless the riders crap. Also a Dunlop slick is a different world to a Pirelli.

With luck we are seeing a slow swing toward new thinking that is long overdue. Lapping faster & faster has meant more sanitised tracks as the safety tries to keep up.

F1 has seen the light. Tyres are now being developed with a new focus - make them harder for the teams and drivers to optimise, to make the racing more intersteing and foster more overtaking etc. Note NOT worried about the lap time, worry about the RACING.

Bike racing needs to do this too. Both MotoGP and WSBK should forget the Tech & Tyres that makes the lap easier and faster as it wrecks the racing.
Keep the machinery close and competitive with the rules, drop rev limits to make exotic tech superfluous, forget the lap time and focus on the RACING. Everyone wins (except factories buying trophies)
