Spies finds an unlikely friend.

So Mary cracked the door to ask Ben if he would see the kids. Ben, still smarting from his race crash, was trying to beg off the visitors when suddenly little Ryota, perhaps taking after his dad, saw his opportunity and edged his way past Mary through the slightly opened door and ran up to Ben.

"The Ben is hurt. Show me where you are hurt!" Ryota said with concern to Spies.

Soon the other children that were with Ryota flooded in and gathered around Ben. Spies sat up and started talking with them. One of the little girls in the group had a cast on her arm. Ben asked her what happened. She'd fallen off a horse. When Ben told her she was brave for riding a horse and that he was scared of horses the little gang burst into laughter.

So a friendship that was put to the test at Assen was restored by the end of the day. Even though Ryota likes it when his dad wins, little Haga still thinks “The Ben” is at least the second coolest rider in the paddock.

After round four of 14, Haga holds a 60 point lead over Spies in the 2009 World Superbike Championship.

Every now and then you just need a nice, make you smile sort of story and this is it. I've spent a bit of time with Nori's kids, firsty at Magny Cours for the final round 2 years ago...Ryota on a mountain bike riding at full tilt at a huge set of steps, fortunately his minder caught him and the bike before he launched off! And then last year at Brands we had the boys with us on the start finish straight for the 2nd race...both lads really enjoying a bit of rough and tumble, especially liking my air horn. Neither was chuffed when Daddy didn't wave to them from the pit lol. The WSB paddock is nuts with the amount of kids flying around on bikes etc...good to see Ben's got a new mate though :)

You're right JT2 One thing we can take away from this is that Haga's 5yr old son has more sportmanship than most adults (including posters on crash). The other thing is that Spies will now forever be known as "The Ben"!
