Can someone explain this Qualifying format to me??

Q1... What the point of Q1, do some riders get dropped?

Q2... On a Saturday mornings (I have a headache trying to work out time differences) is where they drop how many riders?

Q3.. On saturday afternoon is superpole???

But then that doesn't fit with what the article says about dropping 4 riders then some more so that 16 are in the superpole...?? Sure it's not as complex as I am making this but I don't get the point.. is it to try and make Saturdays more interesting, is it the grids to big to simply have a everyone run in a superpole... I guess it just seems a bit stupid to me to have a qualifying session on a friday when everyone goes through... how's that qualifying... ah well... it's probably just me...
