Honda trio gain Donington WSBK wild-cards.

Bennetts British Superbike riders Leon Haslam, Cal Crutchlow and James Ellison have revealed they will take up a wild-card entry to compete in September's World Superbike Championship round at Donington Park.

With Tom Sykes, Chris Walker and Simon Andrews flying the flag for Great Britain in this weekend's World Superbike round at Brands Hatch, Haslam, Crutchlow and Ellison will assume home duties for the second WSBK race to be held on UK soil.

All three will race on their regular BSB steeds, with Haslam and Crutchlow taking HM Plant back to the championship they last regularly competed in back in 2003, and Ellison racing his Hydrex Bike Animal Honda.

For Haslam, who currently lies fourth in the overall standings, this is a fine opportunity to get some more experience on the world stage around his local circuit.

“It's my local circuit and I've raced there many times so will be looking to make that count,” said Haslam who is currently fourth in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship. “I was second in both of those races earlier in the season and there is no reason which I cannot go better – the bike is good and I am determined to go for strong results.”

It was also be an exciting event for Crutchlow, who is currently second in the BSB standings, as the race will mark his first foray onto the World Superbike scene. With HM Plant rumoured with a switch to WSBKs in 2009, his performance is likely to be watched very closely.

The race will also be a good fillip for Ellison, who is enjoying a strong season back in the British Championship after a year spent racing in the United States. Having briefly led at Donington Park the last time BSB visited in May, Ellison will be eager to show well again amongst accomplished competition.

This is a great opportunity for Haslam to step it up. He has finished third and second the last couple of years in BSB and all I read is how people think he is garbage. Even though he has been around for ever (125, 250, and 500 GP), I think Haslam is only 24. He is young and still has a chance to make it back to the World level so he needs good results here. It's just too bad he thought Air Waves was gonna quit racing and left there too early - he could be on the all conquering Ducati 1098R.
