Shane Byrne was pleased to emerge quickest during the post-season World Superbike tests at Portimao after taking to the track on a bike he claims resembles the one that took him to the British title.
Byrne was one of several riders in Portugal getting acquainted to their new surroundings, in his case, aboard the Sterilgarda Ducati.
Nonetheless, it wasn't all-new for the two-time British Champion, Byrne immediately gelling with the Ducati 1098 RS09 by stating it is similar to the machine he dominated BSB on this season.
“I'm really please with the result we achieved in the test,” Byrne, whose best lap of 1min 43.6secs was the fastest of the two days and just a tenth of the lap record, said. “The bike is similar to the one with which I won the BSB title.
“It was easy to get comfortable with the Sterilgarda bike and I immediately felt like a member of the team. We did some hard work on a very enjoyable track which I found really exciting.”
Byrne was joined on track by new team-mate Alex Polita, Sterilgarda's Superstock frontrunner putting in a decent showing to record a best lap of 1min 44.5secs himself
“I quickly found a good pace thanks to the guys of the team and to my new team-mate, who made me immediately comfortable. I got a good feeling with the Superbike from the first lap. It's like an elder sister of the bike I've ridden until last Sunday.
“There are more things to set, that means I will have the opportunity to tailor the bike on me, as I've started to do in the Superstock thanks to the team which taught me so much.”
