Fonsi Nieto could still be present on the 2009 World Superbike grid if plans to run a semi-privateer Suzuki come to fruition.

As first revealed by Crash.net in December, Nieto was ousted from his factory supported ride with the Alstare Suzuki team towards the end of last year following the decision to scale down its operations to run two bikes.

Although the Spaniard has since been heavily linked to a possible ride with any Aspar Kawasaki MotoGP operation, the slim likelihood that the team will go ahead may well see Nieto try his luck at World Superbikes again.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Nieto is in the midst of acquiring a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 to run privately, albeit with input from the works team.

Coming with considerable backing from phone company Pepephone, Nieto, who is considered a sporting hero in his homeland, was not included on the official entry list for the 2009 season, but AS claims a deal is all but signed.

Nieto finished sixth in the 2008 standings with one win at the Losail season opener.
