Hill struggles after practice crash

An accident just before qualifying ruined Tommy Hill's hopes of capturing a better starting position on his World Superbike debut at Phillip Island, the British rider getting just one lap in Superpole to make his mark.

Following an opening day fraught with problems, Hill looked to be on top of his issues during second qualification as he moved into the top twenty with the 15th quickest lap.

Looking to use the unpredictable nature of the new knockout format to possibly spring a surprise, Hill was instead forced to revert to his second Althea Honda bike after crashing in the latter stages of the free practice session that directly precedes Superpole.

With no chance to set the machine up, Hill's plight was compounded further when it wouldn't start immediately. Although he was eventually able to get on track for one flying lap, Hill couldn't lift himself any higher than the fifth row in 20th, much to his frustration.

“I'm very disappointed for what happened this afternoon. I was really unlucky because I crashed near to the end of the free practice, damaging my first bike. Few minutes later the Superpole began and when we tried to switch on the second bike the engine did not start immediately and we lost the first four Superpole minutes.

“My second bike setting was not so good and I was not able to enter the second session of the Superpole. My morning qualifying practice was really very good. We solved all the problem we suffered yesterday, I improved my best lap time and I reached the fifteenth place.

“Tomorrow's races will be very difficult, starting from fifth row, but I'm still positive and I will look for revenge in tomorrow races and I'll try my best to reach a good result.”
