Mark Aitchison was frustrated with himself after crashing out of what would have been his best ever World Supersport finish during the latest round in Qatar.
The Australian rider, whose previous best result of sixth was matched on his debut for Althea Honda last time out at Phillip Island, was heading for fifth at Losail when he took a tumble just two laps from the finish.
A galling result for Aitchison, who says he wasn't even pushing when he came down, he did pick himself up in time to grab a single point for 15th, although he wasn't happy with the eventual result.
“I am really disappointed with today's results. When I crashed I was not pushing so much but unfortunately in a corner the front tyre slid and I crashed. Nothing I can say……..I was able to restart and reach the fifteenth place and one point for my championship standing, but of course this is not what I expected from this race.
“My start was pretty good and I felt confident to push forward but I didn't really have the pace to match the front guys in the final three laps. It was not a good day for me but I know I am riding well and we will focus now on Valencia. Thanks to all in the team for all the hard work during this weekend.”
Team-mate Matthieu Lagrive was one of the riders who capitalised from Aitchison's misfortune, moving up to sixth at the finish line, a position he is now matching in the overall standings after two rounds.
“It was a good race and I finished in sixth place but I'm not really happy because I was not able to push hard enough to get through the pack. That was the best we could do today. We worked very hard during the practice to improve the set up of my Honda but for sure we need to continue to work to be more competitive.
“I am satisfied with the sixth position and with the points I scored, but I hope to have a better result at the next race in Valencia.”
