Byrne keeps points ticking over in Spain

Shane Byrne is hopeful he can turn around his fortunes next time out at Assen after struggling with a knee infection during the latest round of the World Superbike Championship in Valencia.

The British rider had targeted a top five result in Spain but a problem with his knee left him in pain for much of the weekend, while an accident during Superpole didn't aid his cause either.

Qualifying 12th on the grid, Byrne dropped back at the start of both races, but gradually forged his way back up the order to cross the line ninth and 12th to keep his points tally ticking over.

Praising the Sterilgarda team for giving him a competitive bike, Byrne is looking to get back to full fitness for the next round in the Netherlands.

"I would like to thank the entire team for a wonderful job done. Everything seemed to go wrong when on Friday I was 19th and I was in pain because of the knee infection. We didn't quit and we worked all together. The feeling on the bike and on the track was great and the machine responded well also.

“I had two good races despite my starting position. In race two I even touched Biaggi and Corser and lost a lot of positions. However, I'm confident that the team has potential to fight for the top. I hope to do just that at Assen when I'll be recovered physically.”

While I am surprised that shakey has not been further up the grid so far I still think that he is capable of running at the front when he gets through this bad patch. In the second race he made a poor start and was in around 22nd place of thereabouts and made up a lot of places to catch the Biaggi, Sykes group which went totally unnoticed. He has made up a lot of ground in some of the previous races as well.

jake people have been saying outrageous **** on both sides some more than others, alot of you americans were sayin wsb is junk which is a bit extreme, i think callin mladin a gp reject is totally wrong but im sure they dont think that, its become personal so people will say whatever will grind each others respective gears regardless of what they think, it stopped being honest a long time ago on here. As for Mat beating Ben on a regular basis, this is true isnt it? not an insult just fact. But Ben was more consistently fast and didnt make mistakes or let his team make his bike illegal ie he won championships. come on lets all just enjoy the racing were all bike fans at the end of the day
