Pirelli unveil tyre markings

Pirelli have unveiled a new qualifying tyre for the latest round of the World Superbike Championship at Monza, complete with F1-style markings.

The tyre is unique to the high-speed Italian circuit in that it is equal in size, measurement and profile to the race tyre due to Monza's specific characteristics.

In addition, Pirelli have followed in the footsteps of Formula 1 by marking the qualifying tyres from this round onwards.

Criticisms have been levelled at the new Superpole format for its rules on tyre use, particularly the inability to recognise whether the riders are using soft or harder rubber during the three phases of qualifying.

“We continue to put forth significant efforts in developing additional tyre options available to every rider of the Superbike and Supersport grid,” said Pirelli's Giorgio Barbier.

“We are satisfied with all the results, including this new qualifying tyre which guarantees more excitement and visibility into the strategies of each team during Superpole for all spectators, both live and on television.”

Pirelli also revealed that enhancements in their tyre performance have helped overall race times to decrease by an average of 12 seconds so far this season.
