Tom Sykes failed to translate his strong early weekend form in Superpole as he led the casualties from the second qualifying phase.

The British rider wasn't short of commitment as he attempted to wrestle his Yamaha into the top eight, but would eventually fall short in tenth position, just behind Carlos Checa.

The Spaniard himself was demoted in the final seconds by Noriyuki Haga, who languished in ninth position until a last gasp effort catapulted him up to second position, just behind pace setting team-mate Michel Fabrizio.

Troy Corser secured a best starting position in 11th for BMW, ahead of Regis Laconi, who ran off the circuit in the early stages before recovering to 12th. Still ailing from his shoulder injury, Broc Parkes will start a strong 13th for Kawasaki, ahead of Ruben Xaus, while Shane Byrne and Shinya Nakano were also eliminated in 15th and 16th.

The pole position will be disputed by Fabrizio, Haga, Yukio Kagayama, Ben Spies, Ryuichi Kiyonari, Max Biaggi - despite crashing -, Max Neukirchner and Jonathan Rea.
