Race one halted by red flag

An accident at the first corner of the opening World Superbike Championship race at Monza has brought a halt to proceedings after it eliminated five riders.

Two separate accidents occurred in the funnel into the right-left chicane, after Makoto Tamada appeared to clip the back of Brendan Roberts' Ducati. With Tamada down, Roberts ran off the circuit and slid off, his errant bike sliding into the path of the pack and swiping out Max Neukirchner, who had entered the corner in the lead.

Eliminating the three riders immediately, just behind Tommy Hill and Troy Corser were two more to fall at the opening bend, giving race directors no choice but to bring out the red flags.

We will provide full updates on the condition of those involved when they are known.

I've just heard that Max neukirchner has probably sustained a broken leg in that crash - a great shame as he was definitely in with a chance of a top result this weekend. Hopefully he'll recover quickly and I hope no one else was hurt in what looked like a very nasty crash with one bike somersaulting over several riders and another bursting into flames.
