Parkes heads Q1 casualties.

Broc Parkes was confined to an early exit from Superpole qualifying at Kyalami as his final flying effort proved insufficient to bridge the tiny gap between himself and 16th-place safety.

The Australian was the wrong side of the cut-off for much of the session and, despite improving to 1min 38.766secs with his penultimate lap, went slower next time around and fell 0.025secs shy of Gregorio Lavilla, who had improved with minutes to spare but slipped precariously close to the danger zone as time ticked away.

Parkes, who now has to sit and watch as last-minute replacement team-mate Sheridan Morais continues Kawasaki's progress in the session, was joined on the sidelines by Tommy Hill and the expected Pedercini Kawasaki pair, Luca Scassa and David Salom.

Having been subdued by Michel Fabrizio during much of the practice and qualifying build-up to Superpole, Ben Spies returned to a familiar top spot with a 1min 37.809secs effort keeping him out of reach of Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes, while Fabrizio rattled around the foot of the top six.
