While Eugene Laverty celebrated victory in the latest round of the World Supersport Championship at Kyalami, his brother Michael also put in an impressive performance further back after being drafted in as a substitute at Veidec Honda.

The former British Supersport Champion, who is racing in the United States this season, was called upon to replace the injured Robbin Harms at the last minute following the Dane's accident at Monza a week earlier.

Nonetheless, despite a slow start while he acclimatised to the bike, team and circuit, Laverty made fine progress in the race to cross the line in 11th position.

Although not quite the top ten he had his eye on, Laverty was thankful for the opportunity to impress on the world stage having had barely any preparation.

"I really enjoyed the race today, I pushed very hard and I know I had the pace for an 8th place finish but it was difficult to make a pass on this circuit. An 11th place was good considering it was my first time on the bike.

"I improved my times every time I got on the bike, but unfortunately I just missed my goal to finish top 10. I would like to thank the team for their great effort this weekend and thanks again to Milan Milovanovic for the opportunity he gave me to ride here at Kyalami."

With Laverty finishing well ahead of more experienced team-mates Arie Vos and Jesco Gunther, team manager Milan Milovanovic described his rider's performance as 'perfect'.

"The 11th place from Laverty is a perfect job. He managed a good start and battled his way to the front, setting down the fastest laptime of the race. Michael tried to ride as much as possible this weekend and I am sure that if we had more time, we even scored a better result!"
