Mark Aitchison can call himself a World Supersport podium winner for the first time after capitalising on final lap contact ahead of him to beat Joan Lascorz and Kenan Sofuoglu at Kyalami.
Desperate to make up for his retirement last time out at Monza, Aitchison ran with the group that was battling for third for much of the race, although he would enter the final lap in fifth position.
Nonetheless, when Lascorz and Sofuoglu's tussle came to a head with contact towards the end, Aitchison took full advantage to snatch third and score a maiden podium finish, much to his delight.
“It was my luck that I was able to pass Sofuoglu and Lascorz in the last lap but we actually put a couple of good laps down in the last few laps, and I was already hoping that I could bridge the gap to them,” the Althea Honda rider said. “I hoped they might get in the way of each other and it worked out that way. Obviously you don't want to get on the podium like that, but at the moment - I'll take it.
“We are going to work hard to achieve the goals we want to do with our team. We have our own bit of work to do, but so does everyone. We have more points, and it's good to recover from scoring no points in Monza with this podium. Big thanks to my team and I hope we can keep this going.”
