Spies satisfied with early form

Ben Spies was satisfied to claim a provisional second position in first qualifying following the opening day of action at Miller Motorsports Park, the local favourite insistent that there is plenty more to come.

The reigning AMA Superbike Champion looked set to grab the initiative during the session when he lowered his quickest time to 1min 49.901secs with his final effort. However, he would have to settle for second position when Max Biaggi further undercut him to snare provisional pole.

Nonetheless, with the Utah circuit proving some two seconds faster between the practice and qualifying sessions, Spies is expecting more to come over the course of the weekend.

“Today went really well, we got down to some decent times and we were working on the race set up. We definitely can improve it though. We were stuck with the gearbox setting today and didn't have time to change it before the end of the session, it wasn't ideal but it was good to get some good times with what we had. We'll go in and make some changes with the bike and come out swinging."

Yamaha WSB team-mate Tom Sykes, however, endured a tougher day down in 19th position, although he too is adamant there are big improvements to be made.

“It was quite a steady day, but I think we have a lot of improvements to make. We found 1.5 seconds in the last session from this morning which is great, I'm sure we can make another significant step tomorrow. We'll think about the circuit, take it all in and am pretty confident the boys and I will have something even better tomorrow."
