Checa back on front row at Miller

Carlos Checa was happy to put an indifferent first half of the World Superbike season behind him with a strong run to second position during qualifying for the latest round at Miller Motorsports Park.

The Spaniard returns to the scene of his double victory last season currently tenth in the overall standings, but is destined to make progress after snaring a spot on the front row of the grid behind Ben Spies.

While Checa confesses he isn't sure what it is about the Utah circuit that brings out the best in him, he was merely happy to be returning to some kind of prominence.

“It's been a difficult first half of the season but we have been steadily improving and the team is now working really well together, so I am very happy to start from the front row here. I don't know what it is about this place that makes me feel so comfortable on the bike but there is certainly more grip on the side of the tyre and the bike has been steadily improving for the last few rounds.

While Checa is aware that repeating his wins from last season will be a tough task given the margin separating him from Spies, he is nonetheless targeting his best results of the season.

“It certainly won't be easy in the races tomorrow – Ben (Spies) and three or four other riders are very fast, so we'll have to see what happens in the races. But, for sure, it feels very good to be at the front again and I hope to turn it into good results in the races tomorrow.”
