Sykes back in contention at Misano

Tom Sykes overcame a potentially difficult weekend to post two decent top ten finishes at Misano, results that move him back into top five contention overall.

The Briton began the weekend badly as he struggled towards the bottom end of the top twenty, while 14th position on the grid was a far cry from where Yamaha WSB team-mate Ben Spies was positioned.

However, Sykes hit his stride over a longer distance and while he admits he struggled with his consistency in the wet opening half of race one, he was far more content with his performance in the dry.

"From where we qualified we've made a better day of things than I expected,” he said. “For race one in the wet I had some difficulty with too much traction in the first heat. I pulled in a bit sooner than I would have done if I'd had a perfect wet set-up. In the second half we were fast and consistent, I really enjoyed it, but the 14 laps felt like two it was over so quickly.

Going on to claim a seventh and eighth place finish, the result means Sykes is just five points behind fifth place Max Biaggi in the standings heading to his long-awaited home return at Donington Park in just a week's time.

“Race two we made a couple more changes and I was pretty happy with the balance of the bike. I struggled with some rear grip, but we're improving the small bits and it's onwards and upwards. It's been a tough weekend and I'd like to thank the whole of the team, we've put our heads together and they put in a lot of hard work and effort to improve the bike."

I think he's doing well, spies is a sensation and therefore i wouldn't compare him to his teammate. He's fighting for 5th in the standings which for a rookie is very good. Haslam has previous experience of worldsbk and it's tracks, and Rea also has experienced the track with his excellent world supersport season. I don't think he has anything to worry about. As good as bsb is i don't think camier has that many around him who can push him to his limit.

C'mon. He is only behind Haga, Spies, Fabrizio, Rea, Biaggi, and Haslam - he's only 6 pts from being in front of Biaggi and Haslam. Besides Spies, he's the only one that hadn't seen the majority of the tracks. That's pretty damn good no matter how you cut it. Seriously, what else can be expected from a rookie? I can't see Yamaha dumping the guy after his first year with results like that. I think Spies doing so well has people's expections a bit too high. If it was any other year people would be very satisfied with his results.
