Sykes: We should be nearer the top.

Tom Sykes says he has plenty of positives to take into the latter stages of the 2009 World Superbike Championship after finishing mid-season testing at Imola inside the top five.

The Yamaha rider is currently classified seventh in the overall standings, but is yet to step on the podium this year, a fact he is eager to address in one or more of the remaining five events.

Joining team-mate Ben Spies in working on the set-up of the R1, Sykes was closely matched with his title chasing team-mate, giving him a good feeling heading into the upcoming races.

“I started off having a good chat with the team here and then moved into testing with a good plan in mind. We worked through quite a lot on the bike including suspension and brakes and tried some new tyres too and it all came good.

“I ended up fifth overall which was good, we should be nearer the top. It's certainly where I want to be and closing the gap on the front now. Hopefully we're heading to Brno with more information from the test and we'll be strong there.”

Don't think that this guy isn't benefitting from being teammates with the Best guy out there. If it were Sykes and anybody else outside the top 4 or 5 guys on this team with these bikes this year, I seriously doubt he'd be any more than a top 8 or 9 finisher. Not trashing the guy, he just ain't there yet. He could get there, but it obviously isn't going to be a lightning bolt experience or it probably would've happened by now. Still, top seven at this point in the season is pretty good - and in front of some heavy hitters.

@YankeeKraut916 Why do you describe Crutchlow as an 'unknown quantity WSS rider' when he finished ahead of Sykes in the 2008 BSB championship?
