Ben Spies proved he cannot be counted out in the two World Superbike races at the Nurburgring after claiming the quickest time in morning warm-up.
The American, starting fifth on the grid, stated he was set to use warm-up to get to the bottom of set-up issues, Spies duly managing it by edging pole sitter Noriyuki Haga by a tenth of a second.
Yamaha team-mate Tom Sykes shrugged off his disappointing qualifying performance to go third fastest, ahead of Carlos Checa and front row sitters Michel Fabrizio, Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam.
Shane Byrne, Max Biaggi and Ryuichi Kiyonari followed in eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.
