Former grand prix rider Chaz Davies will return to world championship competition after signing to ride for the ParkinGO Triumph BE1 team in the final three rounds of the 2009 World Supersport Championship.
Davies - whose last appearance on the world stage was as a stand-in rider for the Pramac Ducati MotoGP team during four rounds of the 2007 season - will replace the departing Gianluca Nannelli and ride alongside Garry McCoy.
The Briton campaigned uncompetitive 125 and 250GP machinery from 2002-2006 before moving to America, where he won the prestigious Daytona 200 on a Kawasaki in 2008.
This season saw the 22-year-old race an official Aprilia RSV in the new Daytona Sportbike category, where he took podium finishes on his way to ninth in the standings. Davies tested the Triumph 675, which McCoy put on the WSS podium at Donington Park, today (Tuesday) at Mugello.
”I would like to thank Giuliano and the team for this opportunity,” said Davies. “This is my first chance to ride in the WSS Championship and I am excited to experience it and give it my best shot. I've watched ParkinGO Triumph BE1 Racing Team's results progress and I think that between the team and myself we can aim for strong results on the three cylinder Triumph”.
”Last year we came really close to signing a deal with Chaz Davies,” revealed team manager Giuliano Rovelli. “Today I am proud to have a British rider of his stature in the seat of the Triumph Daytona 675. Despite his youth he is a very experienced rider and I feel certain that he will fully express the potential of our bike, an equal match for Garry McCoy”.
Davies will make his WSS debut at Imola on September 27.
