Error costs Spies pole at Imola

Ben Spies blamed a mistake in the final stages of his flying lap during Superpole for missing out on pole position at Imola.

The new championship leader had looked to have wrapped up a tenth pole position of the season around the Italian circuit, but his best effort was usurped by Michel Fabrizio on the Ducati Xerox by four hundredths of a second.

Nonetheless, Spies believes he would have held onto pole position had he not made a 'big mistake' in the final sector.

“It was a good session for us but I kind of blew it in the last section, making a big mistake and that cost us, but I'm on the front row which is where we need to be.”

Looking to extend his 18 point lead over Noriyuki Haga in the overall standings, Spies was excited to have the top four riders in the overall standings starting on the front row.

“All the top guys are on the front row, which is how it should be, none of us will be hanging around so let's hope we have some fun tomorrow.”
