WSS: Laverty back in hunt for Supersport title

Eugene Laverty says he is delighted to be right back in the hunt for the World Supersport Championship after overcoming a weekend beset by returning injury woes.

Laverty finished a fine second position on the Parkalgar Honda after capitalising on a fall for chief title rival Cal Crutchlow, the 20 points he receives for his result slashing the Yamaha rider's advantage in standings to just two.

A positive result on a weekend when Laverty insists he was unable to show is true capabilities, he revealed the changes to schedule on Friday prevented him from having necessary stretches to help alleviate pain from past injuries to his leg and arm.

Forced to take pain injections before the start of the race, Laverty adds that he was unsure he would even reach the finish line, let alone stand second on the podium.

“I wasn't able to show the Parkalgar Honda or my own true potential this weekend because of arm and leg pains that stemmed back to Friday's delayed timings. I have an old injury in my left arm and a problem with my leg that means I have to stretch a lot on Thursday and Friday but this weekend the sessions on Friday were so interrupted I didn't get a chance.

“The result was a lot of pain and this morning I had 10-injections in my arm and leg each – I was worried about even finishing the race so to get second when I could have been much stronger is excellent.”

Just a whisker off the championship lead now, Laverty is vowing to do his best to overhaul Crutchlow over the final two rounds in France and Portugal.

“I can't believe I am back in the fight for the title, this is the closest I've been all year and I'll be going to Magny Cours and then Portimao doing my best to win the World Championship at our home track.”

C'mon Cal, no more mistakes. You can't get this close to becoming a "World Champion" and throw it away. Get your finger out and stay on the bl00dy thing...

Although I'd like to see Cal win the title after showing incredible pace all year, I equally wouldn't be disappointed to see Eugene lift the title in honour of our local hero #18 on his bike, and win it at the final round on their track, how good would that be!!!!! Good luck to the both of you :) :)
