Smrz: We can be regular outsiders
After finishing tenth overall with Guandalini Racing in 2010, Smrz welcomes strengthened team, as well as new title backers, PATA.
Jakub Smrz is hopeful he can be an 'outsider' for victory at every race this season after being formally revealed as the rider for the newly formed PATA B&G Racing team.
Smrz is embarking on his fourth season of World Superbike racing in 2010, the Czech rider having established himself as a top privateer with Guandalini Racing in 2009 with a run to tenth in the overall standings.
With Guandalini joining forces with fellow Italian operation BRC Racing – thus creating B&G Racing – Smrz believes the combined force of two experienced teams will enable them to feature at the front from the opening races.
"This is a great opportunity that has been given to me by the PATA B&G Racing Team,” Smrz said. “Both team managers have vast experience, which will be necessary to enable the new team to be at the top right from the early races. I am convinced that we will have a good chance to do well at every track, our role will be that of outsider in every race."
Despite rumours it would switch to Aprilia machinery in 2010, B&G will remain a Ducati customer outfit, complete with important title backing from Italian snack company PATA.
Speaking at the launch of the rebranded team, Mirco Guandalini is confident Smrz, a pole sitter at Misano last season, can turn his often-excellent qualifying form into better race pace.
"I am delighted to take part in the 2010 season with Marco Borciani. We decided to opt for Czech rider Jakub Smrz, who has collaborated with my team in the last two years, showing a notable improvement. Jakub, who has always been very quick in qualifying, needs just one more step to realize his true talent. We trust that this new technical collaboration will allow him to make that step forward, and improve on the good results he obtained last season."
As well as managing a pole position at Misano, Smrz finished on the podium for the first time at Assen. BRC Racing, formerly known as Sterilgarda Ducati, have enjoyed great success of the years, most notably its 1-2 finish, also at Misano, with Ruben Xaus and Max Biaggi in 2008.
