WSS: Sofuoglu tops opening Supersport test

Kenan Sofuoglu tops the timesheets on his return to action from an ankle injury, the Turk leading Kawasaki's Katsuaki Fujiwara.
Kenan Sofuoglu went a long way to allay fears that he would still be feeling the effects of his ankle injury by topping the timesheets on his return to competition at Phillip Island.

The Turkish rider, World Supersport champion in 2007, was forced to skip last month's Portimao test after breaking his ankle in a motocross accident, but showed no signs of discomfort as he got to within four tenths of his own lap record around the Australian circuit.

Comfortably quicker than the opposition, Sofuoglu, who won the Phillip Island race last season, was the only rider to break 1min 35seconds, with Katsuaki Fujiwara just missing out four tenths behind.

A strong session all round for the Ten Kate Honda team, Sofuoglu's new team-mate Michele Pirro was third fastest behind Fujiwara, while Fabien Foret was a promising fourth on the privately-entered Lorenzini Kawasaki.

Eugene Laverty was fifth fastest, albeit almost a second adrift of Sofuoglu, while former champion Sebastien Charpentier was an impressive sixth as he continues to get acquainted with the Triumph Daytona 675.

His effort was enough to out pace Spanish pair Joan Lascorz and David Salom, as well as Miguel Praia and Chaz Davies.

In total, 17 riders made it out on track for the final test of the off-season, with Britain's Gino Rea making his official Supersport debut on the Intermoto Czech Honda in 15th.
