Kenan Sofuoglu and Joan Lascorz go into qualifying for the first round of the World Supersport season at Phillip Island with barely anything to separate them following a tight second free practice session.
Lascorz currently holds a provisional pole position heading into this afternoon's deciding session, but Sofuoglu signalled his intent to overhaul his rival by edging the Spaniard to the fastest time in FP2.
Just five thousandths would separate the pair, with both riders dipping below Lascorz's provisional pole setting lap from yesterday.
Katsuaki Fujiwara was third fastest on the second Kawasaki, albeit four tenths adrift of his team-mate, while Michele Pirro kept the Japanese rider similarly honest in fourth, seven thousandths behind.
Eugene Laverty, who holds a provisional second on the grid, could only manage the fifth fastest time on the Parkalgar Honda, marginally quicker than Fabien Foret and David Salom, the Spaniard finally making it out on track after a paperwork foul-up prevented him from riding during Friday's sessions.
Nonetheless, the former World Superbike rider was soon up to speed to be Triumph's top representative in seventh, ahead of Intermoto Honda's Massimo Roccoli and team-mate Chaz Davies, the Briton missing part of the session after crashing at turn one.
