Sylvain Guintoli heads to the second round of the World Superbike Championship in Portugal with his sights set firmly on the podium after just missing out on the top three during the Australian season opener

Guintoli made a significant impression over the course of the opening event, the Frenchman shadowing Suzuki Alstare team-mate Leon Haslam throughout the second race to hold down the lead and record the fastest lap.

However, while a late push by his rivals would leave Guintoli down in fourth by the chequered flag, the former MotoGP rider is now certain he is capable of achieving podiums at this level.

Indeed, moving on to Portimao, where he made his WSBK debut last season, Guintoli knows precisely what result he is targeting come race day.

"I am very pleased with my start to the season and I cannot tell you how happy and comfortable I am with my bike. Of course, every time I go out on it I learn a bit more, but already I am thinking of podiums and that is a good feeling to have.

"It has been a long break since the first race and I am itching to get back in the saddle and racing again. Portimao is a great track, but very, very challenging. I think it is one of the best race tracks in the series and I will be doing my very best to get on the podium there."
